(Belgium)- Each summer over half a mile of the city's canal is converted to Brussels-on-Sea ("Bruxelles les bains"), a waterside resort in the city. An urban beach scene is created where visitors can attend concerts, play beach volleyball or other sports and visit shops and restaurants. Watch as straw huts and barbecues, mojito-sipping oiled-up beach beaux and bikini-clad babes spring up in the midst of Belgium's capricious summer. Brussels-on-Sea is about holidaying right in the city, the perfect solution for the super-busy or those who simply cannot afford to get away. From July 17 to August 23, everything is free, and that includes chaises lounges rental, live concerts, beach sports, such as beach-volley and beach soccer, and a team of professional masseurs to knead participants' sunburned shoulders, Shiatsu, Thai or Swedish style. The Sports Field includes beach soccer, rugby, petanque, climbing, frisbee, American football and rowing. A fun day out with a holiday atmosphere is guaranteed – weather permitting, of course. Launched in 2003 and modelled after its Parisian big sister, Brussels-on-Sea has already attracted over one million visitors. (from eurostar.com and worldeventguide.com)
